Abstract

Introduction: Hypertension remains a significant public health issue. Hypertension tends to affect older adults more easily, which can increase the risk of hardening of the arteries. Based on data from the Indonesian Health Survey (SKI), the prevalence of hypertension in Indonesia is 34.11%. In 2023, there were 266,044 people with hypertension in Sukoharjo Regency. As for elderly people with hypertension at the Kartasura Community Health Center in 2024, there were 807 elderly people with hypertension accompanied by complications and 534 elderly people with hypertension without complications. These figures indicate that the prevention of hypertension complications in the elderly is not yet optimal. However, the contribution of the elderly's knowledge and attitudes in preventing hypertension complications is still unknown, so research is needed to determine the relationship between knowledge and attitudes in preventing hypertension complications. Objective: This study aims to determine the relationship between the elderly's knowledge and attitudes in preventing hypertension complications the Kartasura Community Health Center. Method: This study used a quantitative method with a correlational descriptive design and a cross-sectional approach. The study population consisted of 534 elderly people with uncomplicated hypertension. Of these, 229 respondents were selected as samples using purposive sampling based on inclusion criteria. The research instruments used knowledge and attitude questionnaires. Univariate analysis was performed using descriptive statistics, while bivariate analysis used the Spearman Rank test. Results: The results of this study showed that most respondents had good knowledge with good attitudes, totaling 72 respondents (39.6%). The Spearman's rank test yielded a p-value of 0.001 < ? (0.05), which means that there is a relationship and a correlation value (r) of 0.724. Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between knowledge and the attitudes of elderly people in preventing complications of hypertension at the Kartasura Community Health Center. Thus, the better the knowledge of the elderly, the better their attitude towards preventing complications of hypertension.
